Saint Joseph the Spouse of Mary Parish Church / Simbahan ni San Jose, Esposo ni Maria / Church of Gasan (Gasan, Marinduque)

About the Church: Since 1609 there have been 3 places where the Church of Gasan can be Located. The First Church of Gasan was built in honor of San Bernardo de Abad. This was burned down and is now the present site of the Gasan Central School. The Church was again rebuilt at the site where the AA Perez Hospital now stands, but it too burned down. It was again rebuilt at the present site of the Municipal Hall. Since the place where the Church was built was vulnerable to Sea Pirates, it was transferred. The Old Church was built during the middle of the 17th Century by the Jesuits. A Huge Tree Root damaged the Church thru time and it was totally destroyed in 1954.

The Church of Gasan was under the patronage of San Bernardo until 1885. The Church chose San Jose, the Spouse of Mary as their new Patron Saint.

When the Old Church was totally destroyed in 1954, then Father Gonzalo Sargento built a Church at the adjacent lot. Since the Church was built using only wood it too was destroyed in 1986. It was then rebuilt again by Father Angelito Leal. This time using concrete.

My Thoughts on the Church: The Church of Gasan is one of the Gems of Marinduque. It sits on top a high portion of Gasan. From the church you will be able to view the town of Gasan. There is a view deck in the church grounds which will give you a Magnificent View of Gasan. When we went there (June 2012) there were some renovations being done in the interiors of the church. Hopefully next time we go to Gasan it would be finished.

Cathedral of Our Lady of Immediate Succor/ Catedral ng Birhen ng Biglang Awa/ Cathedral of Boac (Boac,Marinduque)

About the Church: It was built in 1756 in honor of the Blessed Virgin of Biglang Awa (Immediate Succor). It was here where Filipinos and Spaniards took refuge from pirate attacks.

Architectural Style: earthquake Baroque

My Visit to the Church: The Cathedral of Boac was the first Church I saw in Marinduque and it left me breathless. The Cathedral of Boac is probably one of the most beautiful Churches in the Country. It is well preserved. Makes me wonder why it has not been included as a National Cultural Treasure.
