Nagcarlan Underground Cemetery and Chapel (Nagcarlan, Laguna)

The Nagcarlan Underground Cemetery and Chapel:

Nagcarlan Underground Cemetery

About the Cemetery and Chapel:

The Nagcarlan Underground Cemetery was built in 1845 by the Franciscans under Father Vicente Velloc. It was built alongside the rebuilding and expansion of the Saint Bartholomew Parish Church and Convent. It was in the Cemetery where the Leaders of the Katipunan held their meetings in 1896.

My Visit to the Cemetery:

The Nagcarlan Underground Cemetery is one of its kind in the Philippines, and it was only recently i noticed how beautiful this Cemetery is. The first few times i visited this Cemetery were several moons ago and in those Visits i never noticed how this Church is similar to the Saint Bartholomew Parish Church. The Blue and White Floor tiles were the same as the ones in the Parish Church. This i NEVER noticed before. The Cemetery grounds and the Cemetery itself are very well maintained. Just fitting for one of Laguna’s Crown Jewels.

The Nuestra Señora de la Porteria Chapel (Majayjay, Laguna)

The Nuestra Señora de la Porteria Chapel:

The Nuestra Señora de la Porteria Chapel

About the Chapel:

In 1759 a painting on canvas of the The Nuestra Señora de la Porteria was brought to Majayjay from Madrid, Spain by the Franciscan Missionaries. The Municipal Captain of Majayjay petitioned for the construction of a Chapel or Ermita to house the Miraculous Image. The Chapel was named in honor of  The Nuestra Señora de la Porteria.

InApril 21,1760 the Image was enshrined in its altar by four priests. The Curator decreed that a mass be held every thursday and ever since many have become recipients of the Miraculous Lady.

My Visit to the Chapel:

Despite having visited Majayjay several times, i never noticed this small chapel. It was by accident that i got to see this chapel. We were already leaving Majayjay when i saw a beautiful view of the church and when i got down the Chapel greeted me.

About the Church:

St. Bartholomew Parish Church (“Nagcarlang Church”) in Nagcarlan, Laguna was first built in 1583 of light materials by then resident priest Rev. Tomas de Miranda. In 1752, the second church was built using bricks and stones but the church was partly destroyed by a fire in 1781. In 1845, the church was reconstructed and a choir loft was added by Rev. Vicente Velloc, who also built the Nagcarlan Underground Cemetery.

Architectural Style: Baroque

My Visit to the Church:

Next to Rizal, Laguna is one of my most visited provinces and the Nagcarlan Church is the only Church of the Great Old Churches of Laguna which i have not visited. Its Elusiveness was a mystery to me until i saw the Church myself. The Church had wanted to be the last to be seen for it’s always the best that is last. The Inside of the Church is impressive if not the most impressive of all the Laguna Churches i have seen. The Blue and White tiles on the walls was just impressive (this made me decide this why the Interior is impressive), matched with the Spanish Floor tiles and it was just heavenly. The Interior would have been perfect except for the main altar which does not look Original anymore.

Our Lady of the Angels Parish Church/ Parokya ng Nuestra Señora de los Angeles/ The Church of Santa Maria Laguna (Santa Maria, Laguna)

The Church of Santa Maria:

The Church of Santa Maria dedicated to Our Lady of the Angels

About the Church: The first Church was built in 1613 by Father Geronimo Vasquez. It was destroyed during the Chinese Uprising of 1639. The church was rebuilt in 1669 but was destroyed by an Earthquake in 1880. In 1891 the Church was rebuilt by Father Leopoldo Arellano. It was destroyed on August 20,1937 by an Earthquake. The present Church was rebuilt soon after.

My Thoughts About the Church: the Town of Santa Maria is often bypassed as the Town is not along the main Highway. But the trip to the Town is worth it as the Church stands proudly in the Town Center. An Old and Elegant Church, One of Laguna’s Gems.
