The Church of Basey – The Saint Michael Archangel Parish Church

About the Church of Basey:

St. Michael the Archangel Church was constructed in the 17th century. The Church was originally under the Archdiocese of Cebu in 1591. The Church was built with a strong foundation of the Jesuits and transferred to the Augustinians in 1768 and to the Franciscans in 1795. It features murals of biblical characters on the ceiling. Its bell tower and stone convent were constructed by Fr. Domingo de Madrid in 1845. It was partly damaged during a typhoon in 1880. Its roof was changed to galvanized iron by Fr. Vicente Gutierrez.

My Visit to the Church of Basey:

It was on the morning of September 4,2013 when we drove to Basey from Tacloban. The View going to Basey was just magical. Fog enveloped the trees of Samar as seen from the San Juanico Bridge and the View seeing the San Juanico like a Snake was just unforgettable. After 20Kms of Driving we reached the Church of Basey and what greeted me was a Beautiful Old Church which stood proudly on a hill overlooking the San Pedro and San Pablo Bay. The Church is well preserved. On the Ceiling Above the Main Altar are paintings of Old Saints, in the Middle is a lovely Painting of San Miguel defeating the devil. The Church also boasts of Exquisitely Carved Stations of the Cross. After shooting pictures of the Interior, i bid my goodbye to the Church and took one last photo of the Church before leaving.

How to Get to the Church:

We went to the Church via Private Vehicle from Tacloban. The Church is around 20kms from Tacloban and will take around 30 minutes to get there.
