About the Church and the El Santo Cristo Milagroso:

The Sinait Church is the Sanctuary of the Miraculous Statue of the Black Nazarene (El Santo Cristo Milagroso), fondly called by its residents as “Apo Lakay,” and a treasure of Ilocandia. History traces the life-sized statue to Nagasaki, Japan. It was sent floating in the sea by missionaries operating in secret in Japan (for fear of persecution during the Tokugawa Regime). It was found by local fishermen in the shores of Barangay Dadalaquiten, on the boundary between Sinait and nearby Badoc, in the year 1620. Fishermen from Badoc tried moving the box, but were unable to do so. Only fishermen from Sinait were able to move the box, which contains the Statue of the Black Nazarene. The fishermen from Badoc, however, were able to move the Statue of the Blessed Virgin Mary (La Virgen Milagrosa) that came with it–which was, in turn, unable to be moved by the fishermen of Sinait. They took the statues to their respective towns, hence becoming their patron saints. In 1656, with a spreading devotion to the Santo Cristo Milagroso due to its miraculous powers, the Black Crucifix was taken to the capital town of Vigan, since an epidemic was raging there and through the devotion of the faithful, many got cured. Because of this, it is considered as an intercessor of all kinds of affliction and sickness. In 1660 because of the growing veneration to the image, the faithful begun the construction of a permanent edifice to house it. It took the people of Sinait eight years to construct the church with funds provides by the Spanish Audiencia. Today the landing site of Apo Lakay still exists in Barangay Dadalaquiten, and is a place of pilgrimage for devotees.

The Church of Dauin

About the Church:

Dauin was one of the oldest towns organized in Negros Oriental. It was under the spiritual administration of the parish of Siaton. Father Jose Barredo administered Dauin in 1796 until his death in 1835. Due to frequent Moro raids, he succeeded in transferring the town to its actual site now.

The parish of Dauin was entrusted to the Recollects in 1857. By the order of Bishop Romualdo Jimeno of Cebu, Fr. Manuel Navarro arrived as the first Recollect parish priest to administer it until his death on August 29, 1864. When he came, the town had only a small church with thin walls made of bricks. He then started the construction of a church made of stone. He was succeeded by Father Tomas Gonzales as parish priest from 1864 until 1874. Father Manuel Cabriada came in 1874 to serve as parish priest until 1898. He remodeled the church in 1874 to make it more spacious, proportionate and beautiful. He added the elegant porch made of fine square hewn stones and slender columns. He finished remodeling the church in 1880.

The Revolution of 1898 forced the Recollects priests to vacate the parish. Meanwhile, the secular priest Fr. Francisco Locsin administered it until their return in 1912. They finally ceded the parochial administration of Dauin to the secular clergy in 1969 with Fr. Leandro Palacios as the Recollect parish priest (1964-1969).

How To Get to the Church: There are several options to get to the Dauin Church. The one we took was a Ceres Bus bound for Bayawan City. There are also Mini Vans which go to Dauin and these can be found near the Dumaguete Bell Tower.

San Nicholas de Tolentino Chapel / La Huerta Chapel / Bisita ng La Huerta (La Huerta, Paranaque)

About the Chapel: The Chapel of San Nicholas de Tolentino or the La Huerta Chapel was built in 1776. The Chapel was converted into a Storehouse and Magazine by the Filipino Army during the Fil American War.

My Thoughts on the Chapel: The Chapel of La Huerta is a Small and Very Old Chapel located in La Huerta. The Chapel was inside a Gated Compound so I was not able to take pictures of the Inside. From the picture of the Chapel taken in 1898. The Chapel looks like it has not changed.
