About the Church:

The history of Saint Joseph’s Church and that of its predecessor, the Church of São José, both built on the same site, is inextricably linked with the Portuguese Mission. Father Francisco da Silva Pinto e Maia of Porto, head of the Portuguese Mission, arrived from Goa in 1826 and founded the Mission in Singapore. When he died in 1850, he left his money and some land for the building of a small church. His funds were augmented by a gift from the King of Portugal and the church was called São José. It was built by the man who succeeded him, the Reverend Vincente de Santa Catarina from 1851 to 1853.

In 1906, the Church of São José was pulled down. The present Saint Joseph’s Church, completed in 1912, was built on the same site by the notable firm Swan & MacLaren.
Situated in the church compound and attached to the Mission was Saint Anthony’s Boys’ and Girls’ School. It was first opened by Father José Pedro Santa Ana da Cunha in 1879 as Saint Anna’s School in a small house along Middle Road. The school moved into the church compound in 1886 and changed its name. In 1893, separate boys’ and girls’ schools were formed. In 1999, the Portuguese Mission handed over Saint Joseph’s Church to the Archdiocese of Singapore.

Saint Joseph’s Church was gazetted a national monument on 14 January 2005. From 4 September to 12 November 2006, the church was one of the exhibition venues for the Singapore Biennale, Singapore’s inaugural international biennale of contemporary art.

Today the church is served by 2 priests, Father Michael Teo and Father Andre Christophe MEP, with daily masses as well as Sunday masses. However, it is not a parish church.
The church was once home to a pipe organ, built in 1888 by Forster and Andrews, but it has since been dismantled. 2 and 3 manual Allen Digital Organs were installed in 2005 and 2009 respectively. The Church also contains an outdoor shrine to Our Lady of Fatima.

Saint Joseph the Husband Parish Church / Church of Rizal Nueva Ecija (Rizal, Nueva Ecija)

The Church is Under the Diocese of San Jose Nueva Ecija, Vicariate of Saint Joseph

About the Church: The first Church was originally located at the foot of a hill overlooking the Rizal Central School. The Church was under the administration of the Diocese of San Fernando. In 1936  very first priest was assigned to the Saint Joseph Church, Father Simeon Ginete. The Church was then transferred to its 2nd Location on a Camarin type house owned by Mrs Elvie Tan. After this, the church was transferred to its present location on the corner of Quezon and Aglipay streets which was donated by the Aleta Family.

My Visit to the Church: The Church was closed when we went there. Even the gate to the church was closed so there was no way to know if there were any doors open. I had previously taken a picture of this Church but never noted down where it was actually located. This time i made sure to write down.

Saint Joseph the Spouse of Mary Parish Church / Simbahan ni San Jose, Esposo ni Maria / Church of Gasan (Gasan, Marinduque)

About the Church: Since 1609 there have been 3 places where the Church of Gasan can be Located. The First Church of Gasan was built in honor of San Bernardo de Abad. This was burned down and is now the present site of the Gasan Central School. The Church was again rebuilt at the site where the AA Perez Hospital now stands, but it too burned down. It was again rebuilt at the present site of the Municipal Hall. Since the place where the Church was built was vulnerable to Sea Pirates, it was transferred. The Old Church was built during the middle of the 17th Century by the Jesuits. A Huge Tree Root damaged the Church thru time and it was totally destroyed in 1954.

The Church of Gasan was under the patronage of San Bernardo until 1885. The Church chose San Jose, the Spouse of Mary as their new Patron Saint.

When the Old Church was totally destroyed in 1954, then Father Gonzalo Sargento built a Church at the adjacent lot. Since the Church was built using only wood it too was destroyed in 1986. It was then rebuilt again by Father Angelito Leal. This time using concrete.

My Thoughts on the Church: The Church of Gasan is one of the Gems of Marinduque. It sits on top a high portion of Gasan. From the church you will be able to view the town of Gasan. There is a view deck in the church grounds which will give you a Magnificent View of Gasan. When we went there (June 2012) there were some renovations being done in the interiors of the church. Hopefully next time we go to Gasan it would be finished.
