The Church of Itogon

About the Church:  Fr. Albert de Reume was the first resident priest of the newly founded Itogon Catholic Mission Station in 1990. And, Jose Smith Fianza donated the present mission lot for priests’ residence. Shortly, thereafter, Fr. Jose Portelange took over and started the construction of a chapel. However, he was re-assigned to Cavite so Fr. De Reume came back to continue the project at hand. In mid – 1909, Fr. Portelange returned to Itogon and built a school for boys. A chapel was also built in Dalupirip.

In 1912, Fr. Leon Quintelier took over and stayed until 1930. During his term, further constructions were done. Bokod, which was separated from Itogon in 1928, had its first chapel in 1916. A chapel was also built in Kabayan in preparation for its separation in 1930. The chapel in Poblacion was extended and the convent became bigger. A complete elementary school for girls was started while the original school was replaced with three well-constructed buildings. A new chapel was erected in Dalupirip and the old chapel became a school building.

Fr. Alfonso Claerhoudt came in 1930, which started mission schools in Poblacion, Acupan, Tocno, Tinongdan, Dalupirip, Balatoc and Antamok. The ICM Sisters came now and then for inspection – supervision of these schools. He also replaced the chapel in Poblacion with a concrete one using the money from inheritance. Unfortunately, the new chapel and all mission schools were destroyed during the Liberation period of World War II. Since there was no money left for reconstruction, the Bureau of Public Schools came after the war to build schools where the present schools were.
While Itogon was still in ruins, Fr. Julian de Lodder came in 1947. He erected the present church and began Sacred Heart High School in 1952. He also started a small poultry. He was succeeded by Fr. George Gelde and Fr. Herman Flameygh. By this time, Itogon was more stable and the succeeding priests worked for consolidating and strengthening the missionary activities. (History from the Diocese of Baguio website)

My Visit to the Church: I thought it would take us hours to get to this Church since the GPS suddenly changed the duration. But there was a road which was not in the GPS so we got here earlier than expected. The Church of Itogon is fairly new, it was just built in 1947. Built entirely of wood, it is a charming church with a Character of its own. With its wooden walls and flowers giving it its unique charm. Though this might be the last time i will probably see the same church as there are plans to renovate the church and with the renovations comes modernization, and eventually the Church’s character will die with this renovation. I just hope the Parish Priest will reconsider conserving the existing Church and not changing it to go with the times.
